A general power of attorney that is in or to the effect of the form specified in the Powers of Attorney Act will constitute a prescribed power of attorney. It may appoint one or more attorneys - either individually, jointly, or jointly and severally - and may appoint an alternative attorney to act in certain circumstances - for instance, on the death of the primary attorney. The signature of the donor of an ordinary power of attorney need only be witnessed by a person over the age of 18, being a person other than the person being appointed.
Section 8 Powers of Attorney Act
A general power of attorney is the simplest type of power, but it ceases to be enforceable if the donor loses mental capacity. For this reason, an enduring power of attorney is preferred for use by an individual, as such a power continues even if the donor loses mental capacity.
